Northaven FC won the first continental title in the club's thirty-four-year history on Sunday night, beating Arwal City FC 2-1 in extra time in the Continental Cup final at the National Stadium. With the score level at 1-1 after ninety minutes, centre-back Luka Brant's header in the 112th minute proved decisive. In a stadium packed with seventy-eight thousand spectators, Arwal City's supporters dominated the stands and their team played the better football for roughly seventy minutes, but fatigue and poor substitutions in the final twenty cost them the trophy.
The road to the final had told a different story for each side. Northaven beat their semi-final opponents over both legs, but by a single goal on aggregate. Arwal City had knocked out the previous champions on penalties in the quarter-final, and their confidence had visibly grown since. Before the final, coach Rafael Costa said his team would play football that makes the ball win, and on the pitch it was almost exactly that - only the result went the other way.
The opening twenty-five minutes belonged entirely to Arwal City. Costa had instructed his midfielders to play in a narrow triangle, with Samir Hamdani at its centre. Inside the first quarter of an hour he played three through-balls that split Northaven's back line. In the 23rd minute, from one of those passes, Diego Marques finished with his left foot into the bottom right corner, leaving goalkeeper Kai Morovic beaten. At the moment of the goal Arwal had sixty-one per cent possession.
Northaven, however, did not panic. Martin Hault's side dropped their line slightly and waited for control of the ball. Their first real chance came in the 38th minute, when Tobias Renner's long ball dropped behind Arwal's back line and Nicolas Ferro ran in from the left to squeeze the ball between goalkeeper Pedro Alves's legs and into the net. That goal changed the shape of the match. Arwal kept pressing but lost their edge, and the score remained 1-1 at half-time.
The first-half numbers make the story clear: Arwal had sixty-three per cent possession, eight shots and four corners, while Northaven managed only three shots. But only two of Arwal's eight attempts were on target, and that was their central problem - the ball reached the box without the intensity of a final pass. Northaven's plan, by contrast, was obvious: deep defending, quick counters and set-pieces. Hault later revealed he had told his players the match would not be won in the first twenty minutes but in the last twenty.
In the second half Costa pushed Ishaan Verma higher and wider on the right. Between the 50th and 70th minutes Arwal created three big chances in succession. In the 58th, Morovic pushed Verma's curling shot away with his left hand. In the 64th, Marques's header struck the crossbar, and from the very next attack Hamdani's effort from distance flew just past the post. In the 69th minute Renner, instead of clearing Verma's low cross, struck it with the wrong foot and the ball looped back to Morovic. For twenty minutes Northaven's defence shook badly, but it did not break.
The second turning point came in the 78th minute. Costa took Hamdani off and brought on a defensive midfielder - a change that looked logical for protecting the score, but Arwal's creativity left the pitch with him. Arwal still had the ball, but no longer had a way through. Hault immediately introduced two fresh pairs of legs and Northaven slowed the tempo, dragging the match towards extra time. It was a risky strategy, because Arwal won two corners late in the ninety, but Morovic punched both clear to keep his team alive.
In extra time Arwal's fatigue became plain. In the first fifteen minutes they got the ball into the opposing box only once. Northaven, lifted by their substitutes, looked quicker than they had in the first 105 minutes. In the 112th minute Emil Sonderson took a free-kick from the left. The direction of the delivery was obvious, but Arwal defender Aditya Sen was a step late in his marking and Brant headed home from seven yards, finding the corner. Alves dived, but the ball was beyond him.
Arwal threw everything forward in the closing minutes, but Northaven kept the ball and ran down the clock. When the full-time whistle went, Northaven's bench poured onto the pitch. The club had finished fifth in their domestic league the previous season and nobody had made them favourites for the title this year.
After the match, coach Martin Hault said the win belonged to discipline. "We said on day one that we would not play the prettiest football, but that we would not stop. Arwal did not let us play the way we wanted for seventy minutes. But my players never gave up and in the end a set-piece created the chance." He also admitted that the 78th-minute change was a risk, and that had Hamdani stayed on the result might have been different.
Costa did not blame luck for the defeat. "We played the better football for sixty or seventy per cent of the match. In football that does not always mean you win. We lost concentration twice - once on the counter in the first half and once on the free-kick in extra time. In a match this big, that is the price you pay." He said the team would have to work on the final pass and on finishing next season.
The man-of-the-match award went to Morovic, who made six saves, two of them decisive - in the 58th and 90th minutes. Brant, besides the winning goal, recorded eleven clearances and four interceptions. For Arwal, Marques was the most active player, but the hole that opened in central midfield when Hamdani went off was one the team could not fill.
The statistics repeat the story of the match. Arwal held fifty-eight per cent possession across the game, took seventeen shots and won eleven corners. Northaven had nine shots and three corners, but two of their five efforts on target became goals - that was their efficiency. Curiously, Arwal lost the ball inside their own box only four times, while Northaven gave it away twenty-one times in their own half and still conceded nothing.
For Northaven this title is more than a trophy. The club spent the last three years trusting players coming through its academy, and the payoff is now visible. Brant and Renner are both products of that academy and both played decisive roles in the final. The club will now play in next season's Super Cup, which should bring it major financial benefit for the first time.
The defeat is bitter for Arwal City, but their season is not over. They lead the domestic league and still have a title to win. Costa's challenge will be to stop this loss from bleeding into the remaining fixtures. Finals like this often split teams in two directions - either they break, or they come back harder the following season.
This final proved one thing once again: possession and shot counts do not win matches; the right decisions in the eleven or twelve moments inside and around the box do. Northaven kept a cold head in those moments, and that is why, after thirty-four years of waiting, the trophy is finally in their hands.
